Golf in Cyprus
The official governing body for golf in Cyprus, is the Cyprus Golf Federation which is a member of both the International Golf Federation and the European Golf Association. Golf is relatively new to Cyprus, with its roots dating back to 1988 with the inception of the United Nations Golf club which was located near the site of the pre 1974 Nicosia Airport which is a UN protected area. There were no commercial golf courses before 1990, except for those built on the British Sovereign Bases in the Limassol and Larnaca area. A small group of golf enthusiasts founded the Nicosia Golf Club which led to the formation of the Cyprus Golf Federation. In 2003 the Federation was renamed the International Golf Club of Nicosia. From these humble beginnings the CGF now organizes major international golfing competitions in Cyprus. From January 2008 all golf courses in Cyprus have been rated according to international standard and all members use the EGA handicapping system with the meter being the distance unit. Golf has become a very popular sport in Cyprus, and is supported by a growing number of enthusiasts both locally and from abroad.
Cyprus now offers award winning golf courses in the most amazing settings overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, most of which are located in the Paphos area. There are currently 4 main golf courses in leisure developments, which include luxury villas and hotels. Due to the great weather in Cyprus, the golf courses are open all the year around.
